Die BalkanBrothers präsentieren:
„Tour durch Thrakien“
An der Schnittstelle zwischen Bulgarien, Griechenland und der Türkei liegt Trakia (Thrakien), ein Schmelztiegel der Kulturen und Musikstile. Diese Region dient als Ausgangspunkt für die „Tour durch Thrakien“.
Die BalkanBrothers enthüllen alle Geheimnisse unregelmäßiger Taktarten. Darüber hinaus werden sie unter anderem folgende Fragen untersuchen:
Wie erreichen griechische Geiger diesen „entspannten Klang“ ihrer Geigen? Wie bringt man eine Klarinette zum „Zwitschern“? Und wie kreiert man auf dem Akkordeon schwungvolle Gypsy-Beats?
- Während des Kurses werden wir mit drei Bands zusammengestellt aus Teilnehmenden arbeiten.
- Die Lehrer wechseln zwischen den Bands und alle erhalten Unterricht von jedem BalkanBrother.
- Am Samstagabend werdet Ihr beim BalkanBrothers-Konzert zusätzliche feine Details beobachten (und erkennen). Im Anschluss gibt es eine Balkan Jam Session!
- Ihr habt die Möglichkeit, andere MusikerInnen kennenzulernen und möglicherweise neue BandkollegInnen zu finden!

Bart de Kater
Bart schloss sowohl sein Bachelor- als auch sein Masterstudium am Conservatorium van Amsterdam mit Auszeichnung ab. Neben klassischer Musik erkundet Bart auch gerne die Welt der Volksmusik und spielt Kaval und Gaida, traditionelle bulgarische Instrumente wie Hirtenflöte und Dudelsack.
Er erhielt Unterricht in Bulgarien bei Meistern wie Nikola Iliev (Klarinette), Ivan (Balki), Georgiev (Gaida) und Temelko Temelkov (Kaval). Bart ist Mitglied des Dutch Wind Ensembles, in dem neben klassischer Musik auch Weltmusik eine herausragende Rolle spielt. Er hat Länder wie Jordanien, die USA, Israel, die Türkei, Polen und China bereist. Bart ist einer der Gründer des New Amsterdam Clarinet Quartet. Er arbeitet als Hauptlehrer für Klarinette am Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
Wilco Oomkes
Mit Balkanmusik aufgewachsen, begann Wilco Oomkes im Alter von 7 Jahren Akkordeon zu spielen. Inzwischen hat er einen Bachelor- und einen Master-Abschluss im klassischen Akkordeon mit den Nebenfächern Jazz und Pädagogik erworben. Vielfalt und Vielseitigkeit in der Musik sind ihm wichtig, danach sucht er in allen Projekten, die er macht. Er arbeitet als freischaffender Akkordeonist, Arrangeur/Komponist und Session-Musiker. Er unterrichtet und tritt regelmäßig mit Theaterproduktionen, klassischen Musikbühnen, seinem Ensemble Butwhatabout, Balkan und OT AZOJ auf. Da er seit seinem 7. Lebensjahr Balkanmusik spielt und den Balkan mehr als 10 Jahre lang besucht hat, kann er sein Wissen über Balkanmusik, insbesondere bulgarische Musik, weitergeben. www.wilco-oomkes.com
Joris van Beek
Wie Wilco begann Joris schon in jungen Jahren, Balkanmusik zu spielen und zu hören. Mit 15 gründete er seine erste Band und hörte nie auf zu spielen. Er studierte türkische und griechische Stilrichtungen bei Codarts, Rotterdam und Pädagogik in Den Haag (Bachelorpädagogik und Masterstudiengang, Musikpädagogik nach dem Kodaly-Konzept). Joris teilt seine Leidenschaft für Musik täglich an der International School in Rotterdam. 1994 war er einer der Gründer von OT AZOJ und seit 1997 ist er Teil der Balkan Swingband Sultan. Zwischen 2003 und 2014 war er Teil der Klezmer-Theaterband Di Gojim. Der Besuch der Balkanländer ist eine jährliche Routine und daher ist das Erlernen der balkanischen Bogentechniken etwas, was ihn leidenschaftlich interessiert.
BalkanBrothers
The Balkan Brothers ist ein Trio mit Bart de Kater an der Klarinette, Gaida (Dudelsack aus Ziegenholz) und Kaval (Hirtenflöte), Wilco Oomkes am Akkordeon und der Tapan(große Trommel) und Joris van Beek an der Violine, Trompetenvioline (eine Kreuzung aus Violine und Trompete), Tambura und dem Kontrabass.
Ihre gemeinsame Leidenschaft für Balkanmusik zeigt sich in ihren häufigen gemeinsamen Reisen in die bulgarische Stadt Plovdiv, wo sie Unterricht bei musikalischen Meistern erhielten.
Ein Konzert der Balkan Brothers zu besuchen ist wie das Erleben eines Wirbelsturms balkanischer Stile und Klänge. Es ist, als würde man mit den Dorfbewohnern trinken, tanzen, bis man die Füße nicht mehr spürt, und sich zudem in einem Dorf auf dem Weg zu einer Party verirrt, das in jedem Dialekt einen anderen Namen hat.

BalkanBeatsEverything On Tour – TÜBINGEN (10.-12. November 2023)
The BalkanBrothers present:
„Tour of Trakia“
At the intersection of Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey lies Trakia (Thrace), a melting pot of cultures and musical styles. This region serves as the starting point for the „Tour of Trakia“.
The BalkanBrothers will reveal all the secrets of irregular time signatures. Additionally, they will explore questions such as: How do Greek violinists achieve that „lazy sound“ from their violins? How can you make a clarinet „chatter“? And how do you create lively gypsy beats on your accordion?
- During the course, we will work with three student bands.
- The teachers will rotate among the bands and you will receive lessons from each BalkanBrother.
- On Saturday evening, you can observe (and recognize) the fine details during the BalkanBrothers concert. Afterward, there will be a Balkan Jam session!
- You will have the opportunity to meet other musicians and potentially find new bandmates!
When you hear it, you can’t sit still. And as a musician, you really want to know how to play it!
How do all these odd time signatures work? Is it as complicated as it seems? How do the Greeks get this sound out of their violin? How do you put a exciting gypsy beat on an accordion? Why does Bulgarian sound different than Serbian or Bosnian? What are the differences between the styles? What musical refinements can be discovered on different instruments?
Bart de Kater (clarinetist), Joris van Beek (violinist) and Wilco Oomkes (accordionist) of the BalkanBrothers know the peculiarities of Balkan music. They have been playing and studying it at a high level for years and strive to pass on this knowledge.
Together with the BalkanBrothers you dive into the klezmer and Balkan repertoire. Approach Balkan music, learn to play style-specific embellishments on your instrument and discover a lot of new repertoire!
It doesn’t matter if you are (semi) advanced or professional – this weekend has something for all musicians!

Bart de Kater
Bart graduated with honors from both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. In addition to classical music, Bart also enjoys exploring the realm of folk music and plays the kaval and gaida, traditional Bulgarian instruments such as the shepherd’s flute and bagpipe.
He received lessons in Bulgaria from masters such as Nikola Iliev (clarinet), Ivan (Balki) Georgiev (gaida), and Temelko Temelkov (kaval). Bart is a member of the Dutch Wind Ensemble, where, in addition to classical music, world music is also prominently featured. He has toured countries such as Jordan, USA, Israel, Turkey, Poland, and China. Bart is one of the founders of the New Amsterdam Clarinet Quartet. He works as a principal clarinet teacher at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
Wilco Oomkes
Raised with Balkan music, Wilco Oomkes started playing the accordion at the age of 7. He now has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in classical accordion with minors in jazz and pedagogy. Diversity and versatility in music are important to him, and he looks for them in all the projects he does. He works as a freelance accordionist, arranger/composer and session musician. He teaches and performs regularly with theater productions, classical music stages, his ensemble Butwhatabout, Balkan and OT AZOJ. Since he has been playing Balkan music since he was 7 and has been visiting the Balkans for more than 10 years, he is able to share his knowledge of Balkan music, especially Bulgarian music.

Joris van Beek
Like Wilco, Joris began playing and listening to Balkan music at a young age. At 15 he formed his first band and never stopped playing. He studied Turkish and Greek styles at Codarts, Rotterdam and pedagogy in The Hague (bachelor’s and master’s degree, music pedagogy according to the Kodaly concept). Joris shares his passion for music daily at the International School in Rotterdam. In 1994 he was one of the founders of OT AZOJ and since 1997 he is part of the Balkan swing band Sultan. Between 2003 and 2014 he was part of the klezmer theater band Di Gojim. Visiting the Balkans is an annual routine and as such learning Balkan archery techniques is something he is passionate about.
BalkanBrothers
The Balkan Brothers are a trio with Bart de Kater on clarinets, gaida (a bagpipe made from goat), and kaval (a shepherd’s flute), Wilco Oomkes on accordion and tapan, and Joris van Beek on violin, trumpet violin (a cross between a violin and a trumpet), tambura, and double bass.
Their shared passion for Balkan music is evident in their frequent joint trips to the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv, where they received lessons from musical maestros.
Attending a concert by these amazing musicians is like experiencing a whirlwind of Balkan styles and sounds. It’s like drinking with villagers, dancing until your feet fall off, and getting lost on the way to a party in a village with a different name in every dialect.
